Official servers are the ones in Rust's in-game Official tab: Facepunch's own and its partners', such as RustSpain. Rust Population keeps that list by hand, by hostname and address. Everything else is a community or modded server.
We counted 89,567 people on public Rust servers at the last refresh, and 942 more waiting in queues. Counts come from what each server reports every five minutes, so read them as a recent reading rather than a fixed total: the population here is 27 Oct 2026, 15:30 UTC. Below you will find how it has moved over the last day and the last months, and how it splits by game mode, modded or vanilla, group size, gather rate, region and wipe day. Most players are in Europe in the evening; the quietest hours hold a fraction of that.

Survivalthe standard game: gather, build, raid9,167 servers
At the last refresh, 89,567 players were on public Rust servers, spread over 11,777 servers. The figure is a snapshot from server reports no more than five minutes old and moves through the day. The busiest hour of the day usually holds well over twice the players of the quietest.
Q.2Why does this differ from Steam's Rust player count?
Steam counts everyone with the game open: people in menus, on loading screens and on servers that do not list themselves publicly. We count only players on public servers, because that is the only population we can split by region, mode and wipe day. Treat it as a lower bound on everyone playing.
Q.3When is the Rust population at its busiest?
Europe in the evening, in UTC terms. The hourly chart on this page averages the last week, so you can see where your own evening falls against that peak. Australian evening lands in the late morning in the UK, and the US east coast evening runs after midnight there.
Q.4Do most Rust players choose modded or vanilla servers?
Modded servers carry more players in total, mostly because there are many more of them. The split shown here is live and shifts as servers report, so check it again when you pick a server rather than relying on today's reading.
